If you write your own bio for a website, do you put it in the first person or third? Is starting off with a question like that cliche?

Hi. My name is Joe, and between the picture at the top of the page and those opening sentences, you probably have a good idea of the kind of person I am: I think too much, I close my eyes when I smile, and I like  to wear plaid.

More specific to music, though, I've been writing and performing for 10 years. I started playing piano when I was five, and I started guitar in middle school. My first album, a november life, came out in 2008, and I've put out a new album or EP each year since then. I've most recently released a live version of Color, the studio version of which has become the Chinese Democracy of my career.

I've opened for Jacob Metcalf and We The Kings (gotta throw big names out there, ya know) and generally play venues in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Des Moines. On a sunny day you'll likely find me busking across the street from Lion Bridge Brewing to earn my beer money and make some new friends.

I write about life, I sing until I can't, and I play whatever sounds good to my ears. Most of my songs are autobiographical, but some are about the people I meet and the places I go. I enjoy using my loop station live, but I'll be the first to admit that Ed Sheeran does it much better than I do. I hope you'll take the time to read the lyrics and stories behind the songs I've shared here.

I feel like I just wrote a bio for online dating.

("What's with the greater than symbol?" Some musicians have cool symbols that represent them (Twenty One Pilots have |-/ and Ed Sheeran uses x) so I'm trying to make > my symbol, because we're all greater than, we're all louder than, something. And yes, I probably can't just make > happen, but hey, a guy can try.)

For inspiration I listen to: Damien Rice, Andrew McMahon, Passenger, Ed Sheeran, Augustana

You can decide for yourself who I do or do not sound like. Hopefully you'll decide I sound like myself.
